Hot rolled steel products are divided into two groups: hot rolled coils produced through hot rolling and hot rolled steel plates, which are made by cutting material from hot rolled coils. Slabs produced from a continuous casting system are rolled, cooled and coiled into the sizes required by the customers.
POSCO has six hot rolling plants in Pohang and Gwanyang works, garnering a global reach. Hot rolled products are used extensively for various applications including machines, architectural structures, car structures, general/API steel pipes and cold rolling.
Steel for Cold Rolled Steel
This product is typically used for cold rolling and among the hot rolled products has the lowest strength. It has wide applications ranging from regular machining to drawing and ironing. It is also used in a variety of cold rolled products including CR, GI, EG and color plates.

High Strength Steel is made by adding silicon, manganese, nickel, chromium, copper and other elements to carbon steel containing 0.2 percent of carbon for higher performance. With a tensile strength of about 50 kg/mm2, this steel features a reasonable level of strength and toughness. High Strength Steel can be classified into bake-hardening steel, solid-solution strengthening and precipitation hardening steel. It also has many variants: BH (Bake-Hardenable) steel, HSLA (high strength low alloy), R (rephosphorized) steel, IF (Interstitial Free) HSS and ATOS (AuTOmobile Structural) steel.
Key Specifications
?High strength low alloy (HSLA) is made by adding precipitation enhancing elements (i.e., Ti, Nb) to low carbon steel to disperse carbonized precipitation into fine grains. Common elements contained in the precipitation that are created during this process include NbC, TiC, VC and AIN. These elements interrupt dislocation motion, improving strength and impact toughness. The smaller the precipitation, the higher the strength becomes. Affordability coupled with high strength makes the steel popular as reinforcement for impact toughness in motor vehicles.

It is a high-strength hot rolling product consisting of nano-sized precipitates and fine grains with a diameter of 1to 3 ¥ìm. It has high tensile strength due to the precitpitation strengthening by nano-sized precipitates, and excellent impact resistance and stable fatigue resistance with fine ferrite grains made by recrystallization controlled rolling. We controls the formation of impurities and emulsions in the steel to improve internal quality.

Advanced high strength steel is metallurgically classified as transformation toughened steel using low-temperature transformation structure. Its variants include DP (Dual Phase) steel, TRIP (TRansformation Induced Plasticity) steel, XF (eXtra Formable) steel, TWIP (TWinning Induced Plasticity) steel, CP (Complex Phase) steel, Mart (Martensitic) Steel, FB (Ferrite and Bainite) steel and HB (Hyper Burring) steel. Among them, those having a tensile strength of over 1 GPa are called giga steel.
Key Products
Dual phase (DP) steel is intended for those requiring ultra-high strength steel sheets to reduce body weight in their cars. It consists of a ferrite matrix and martensite having phase 2 structure. Featuring a low yield ratio of 0.5 to 0.6, DP steel is easy to work on and has the second highest elongation after TRIP steel. It also has good bake hardening since it is cooled quickly after being heated in an annealing furnace and goes through an overaging section at a temperature lower than Ms (to avoid hardening).
Hot rolled 590DP provides a yield strength of over 305 MPa and a tensile strength of over 590 MPa, thus ideal for auto chassis parts that require higher strength such as chassis parts.

This steel is ferrite-bainite dual phase steel intended to provide a better hole expansion ratio. Ferrite has good elongation while bainite has good flangeability. Combination of the two means excellent hole expansion. To achieve quality FB steel, it is imperative to keep hot rolled steel sheet in the ferrite area properly to create highly pure ferrite and then concentrate solute atoms on untransformed austenite before cooling it quickly to ensure that austenite can transform into bainite.
Hot rolled 440FB provides a tensile strength of over 440 MPa, thus ideal for auto chassis parts that require HER of over 50. Hot rolled 440FB is dual phase steel consisting of ferrite and bainite. The minimal difference in harness between the two elements means that the steel has a good HER.

Post Heat Treatment Steel allows you to define heating/cooling conditions before or after the processing of steel. Its types include HPF (Hot Press Forming) steel, Autobeam and Stab (Stabilizer).
* Autobeam and Stab are registered product names.
Key Products
PHT
Unlike HPF that goes through tempering after forming within a cast, PHT steel is hot rolled before going through tempering. This way, the steel can have a very high strength. It also features high formability and weldability thanks to hardening elements such as B.
Hot rolled Autobeam gets tensile strength of around 1,300 MPa after forming and heat treatment. Autobeam is a registered product name of POSCO and mainly used for automotive parts.
