This part takes charge in a driving-associated function, the most essential characteristic of a car. It determines the basic performance of the car, connected to the floor part. It also plays a role of absorbing crash energy from the road, to prevent them from being delivered to drivers and passengers. It consists of components with different purposes: one for withstanding the external loading, and the other for absorbing/distributing the external impact such as a shock absorber and spring. GIGA steel is applied to the suspension structures, showing excellent performances.
SIt determines the basic performance of the car, connected to the floor part. It also plays a role of absorbing crash energy from the road, to prevent them from being delivered to drivers and passengers. POSCO’s ‘GIGA steel’ is applied.
‘GIGA steel’ is the steel sheet capable of withstanding more than 100kg per its area of 1mm2 without rupture. The load corresponds to 10t exerted on a cross section of penny size. POSCO has developed a light suspension system that can be used longer by using ‘GIGA steel’.
Suspension springs can mitigate shock or vibration and provide a better ride and greater safety for the vehicle. This is another application where POSCO’s spring steel is commonly used. The steel can withstand repeated application of load, minimizing the possibility of cracks over time. Springs made of POSCO’s steel have a fewer number of windings, resulting in reduced weight.
Fitted to the wheel of a motor vehicle, the hub bearing is a component that transfers power from the drive axle to allow the wheel to rotate. It is a common application for POSCO’s bearing steel. Since the steel is used for wheels, which are directly related to the safety of occupants, it is subject to an extremely high level of quality assurance practices. This allows the component to defy abrasion, cracks and deformation after long-term use.
Tire cord is in contact with the rubber within a tire, bears the load of the car, maintains the shape of the tire and helps extend its life. POSCO’s wire rods are used extensively for this application.Located within the rubber layer, POSCO’s tire cord can mitigate pressure and shock from outside and extend the life of the tire. One strand of tire cord is as thin as a hair. About 5 kg of tire cord is used for a passenger car.
