Cold rolled steel is made using hot rolled steel through pickling, cold rolling and heat treatment. It is relatively thin with a thickness of 0.2 mm to 2.0 mm. Cold rolled steel is highly aesthetic and easily machinable, thus widely used for premium applications in modern society. We are increasingly focused on offering value-added products as demand for highly functional, cold rolled products is rising.
We operate two plants in Pohang and four in Gwangyang to produce cold rolled steel. Cold rolled steel¡¯s applications range from home appliances including motor vehicles, washing machines and fridges to industrial and architectural uses. In addition, as new applications for this steel emerge, including steel cans and steel houses, we focus on delivering products of greater added value and expanding their applications.
Mild Steel
Mild Steel
Mild Steel has a low carbon content and is relatively soft, having a tensile strength of no greater than 340 MPa. Its good elongation and great formability make the steel popular for many applications ranging from regular to sophisticated machining. Its most common application is automotive parts.
Key Specifications

Featuring deep drawing and high strength, high strength steel can be classified into bake-hardening steel, solid-solution strengthening and precipitation hardening steel. It also has many variants: BH (bake-hardenable) steel, HSLA (high strength low alloy), R (rephosphorized) steel, IF (interstitial free) HSS, ATOS (AuTOmobile structural) steel and HB(Hyper Burring) steel.
Key Specifications
?BH (bake-hardenable) steel is made by adding interstitial elements to extra low carbon steel and applying hardening process for a higher yield strength. Bake-hardenable steel is easy to form during the early stage of forming and sees an increased yield strength of 30 MPa in the bake hardening effect as the process unfolds. Since it has a higher dent resistance than commercial quality steel, it maintains good dent resistance even after its thickness is reduced.
180YB provides a yield strength of over 180 MPa, which can be increased to over 210 MPa after the bake. This steel is extensively used for motor vehicles¡¯ outer panels that require high dent resistance and formability, such as hoods and door outers. Products include CR, EG, GI and GA.

High strength low alloy (HSLA) is made by adding precipitation enhancing elements (i.e., Ti, Nb) to low carbon steel to disperse carbonized precipitation into fine grains. Common elements contained in the precipitation that are created during this process include NbC, TiC, VC and AIN. These elements interrupt dislocation motion, improving strength and impact toughness. The smaller the precipitation, the higher the strength becomes. Affordability coupled with high strength makes the steel popular as reinforcement for impact toughness in motor vehicles.

Such substitutional elements can cause grid deformation and increase internal stress, which disrupts dislocation motion and thus improves strength. This steel is intended for customers that require higher strength to achieve reduced weight for their motor vehicles. The steel¡¯s deep drawing can be achieved by adding Ti, the oxi-nitrocarburizing element, to ultra-low carbon steel while its high strength can be achieved by substitutional elements such as P and Mn to ultra-low carbon steel. B is added to minimize grain embrittlement that might be caused by segregation P.
180Y-XR (eXtra R) is intended for applications that require higher formability than 180YE. Its yield strength is over 180 MPa and elongation is over 42 percent. 180Y-XR features a very low level of interstitial elements {111} and increased density to increase insulation performance (R-value). Advanced High Strength Steel is metallurgically classified as transformation toughened steel using low-temperature transformation structure. Its variants include DP (Dual Phase) steel, TRIP (TRansformation Induced Plasticity) steel, XF (eXtra Formable) steel, TWIP (TWinning Induced Plasticity) steel, CP (Complex Phase) steel, Mart (Martensitic) Steel and FB (Ferrite and Bainite) steel. Among the variants, those with a tensile strength of over 1 GPa are referred to as Giga Steel.
Key Specifications
?Dual phase (DP) steel is intended for those requiring ultra-high strength steel sheets to reduce body weight in their cars. It consists of a ferrite matrix and martensite having phase 2 structure. Featuring a low yield ratio of 0.5 to 0.6, DP steel is easy to work on and has the second highest elongation after TRIP steel. It also has good bake hardening since it is cooled quickly after being heated in an annealing furnace and goes through an overaging section at a temperature lower than Ms (to avoid hardening).
490DP provides a tensile strength of over 490 MPa, thus ideal for auto structural parts that require high strength. It also suffers no strain aging because it is rigid, with a yield strength of over 270 MPa. Thanks to these properties and the tendency towards weight reduction, the steel is increasingly used for outer auto parts. Those intended for the exterior, in particular, are subject to strict quality assurance practices. Products include CR, EG, GI and GA.

It is a type of steel designed to provide ultra-high strength and high formability for customers to reduce the weight of their car bodies. It is basically a dual phase alloy consisting of the ferritic matrix, bainite and residual austenite. It often contains a small amount of martensite. With a yield ratio of 0.57 to 0.67, TRIP steel has good formability (elongation), thus ideal for parts that require high formability. High strength TRIP steel is hardly applicable to galvanized steel. This is because it contains Si and other elements that work against plating.
590TRIP provides a tensile strength of over 590 MPa. It features higher elongation than HSLA and DP steels having a tensile strength of 590 MPa. Its products include CR, EG and GA.

It is a type of steel designed to provide ultra-high strength and high formability for customers to reduce the weight of their car bodies. Its tensile strength multiplied by elongation is over 25,000 MPa%. POSCO offers 980PosM_XF, a CR steel of 980 MPa grade. The process to make PosM_XF involves heat treatment at a temperature range where dual phases of ferrite and austenite exist and quick cooling to a tempering temperature. This allows ferrite, martensite and residual austenite to exist at room temperatures. Its fine crystal grains allow the steel to have high yield strength. The existence of residual austenite plays an important role in achieving an elongation of over 25%.

As a single-phase austenitic steel featuring high carbon and high manganese, this steel experiences deformation twin upon machining, showing improved strain hardening ratio, strength and elongation. Photos of its microstructure taken during tensile testing provide proof of deformation twin. The greater the degree of deformation, the more twins occur.
950TWIP steel has a tensile strength of over 950 MPa and elongation of over 45 percent as well as better strain hardening than commercial steel. It can be used for parts that require high energy absorption upon impact.
ApplicationsImpact related parts of motor vehicles that are designed to absorb energy upon impact, such as bumper beams, and automotive parts that require high formability into sophisticated shapes, such as subframes

Post Heat Treatment Steel allows you to define heating/cooling conditions before or after the processing of steel. Its types include HPF (Hot Press Forming) steel, Autobeam and Stab (Stabilizer).
* Autobeam and Stab are registered product names.
Key Products
HPF
HPF (hot press forming) process is also called hot stamping, press hardening or die quenching. This process involves forming using steel sheets and a press. Sheets at a high temperature are highly ductile, thus ideal for sophisticated shaped. A sheet heated during forming is cooled quickly within a mold. This allows the steel to have very high strength.
Unlike regular HPF that contains boron to increase strain hardening of steel sheets, POSCO¡¯s cold rolled 1470HPF contains manganese and no chromium. In boron-added steel, boron remains in the form of the bake to maximize quenching. To do this, it is imperative to precipitate N into TiN in the steel. In contrast, POSCO adds N to make the steel remain as bake and increase its yield strength during the baking process after painting. Products include CR and Al-Si.
