Energy

POSCO contributes to the development of the energy sector by delivering
the high-performance steel products and solutions required in every corner of the industry.

Our products for energy-related applications are extensively used to develop, produce, refine, transport and store energy sources including oil and gas. Produced under strict quality assurance practices, they can provide the strength, impact toughness, weldability and workability required to withstand harsh conditions including those found in the ocean and polar regions. Current customers include local and international energy companies, heavy-duty equipment makers, pressure vessel makers and offshore and wind power structure makers.

LNG Carrier

This vessel carries the methane (CH4, the primary element of LNG) used in homes and factories in a liquefied state.

Membrane Type LNG Tank,This is a hexagonal storage tank for liquefied natural gas. POSCO's stainless steel is widely used for the interior of the tank to withstand extremely low temperatures.
Hull, The Hull is the body of a ship that can keep LNG tanks safe through harsh waves. POSCO's structural steel for shipbuilding is used extensively for this application.
Independent Type LNG Tank, The tank's spherical or cylindrical shape requires an ability to withstand extremely heavy weight. Ideal for POSCO's high manganese(Mn) or high nickel(Ni) steel.

Stainless steel for LNG tanks that can withstand temperatures of -163¡ÆC

The tank, often a hexagonal membrane type, stores liquefied natural gas (LNG). Such a type and shape allow the tank to store a large amount of gas without loss of space. LNG experiences a dramatic change in its temperature while it is transported from offshore to onshore.

Its temperature is extremely low (-163¡ÆC) during transportation, but rises all the way up to 20-30¡ÆC afterward. In general, steel is highly apt to break upon impact at very low temperatures or in the event of a dramatic change in the temperature. POSCO offers stainless steel for membrane type LNG tanks that contains nickel to prevent breakage upon impact or in the event of a dramatic change in the temperature. Actual applications of the steel include Mark III of GTT and KC-1 of KOGAS.

High manganese steel that does not break at as low as -196¡ÆC

Independent LNG tanks are of spherical or cylindrical shape. They must be able to withstand heavy weight. For this application, POSCO¡¯s high manganese steel or high nickel steel is used.High manganese steel is a new steel type made by adding 3 to 27 percent of manganese to steel. It does not break at an extremely low temperature as low as -196¡ÆC and makes greater economic sense, saving the cost of steel and welding materials used.

Ultra-low temperature high manganese steel is widely used for LNG tanks installed on vessels or on the ground.

POSCO¡¯s structural steel and STEP plates for shipbuilding

The hull is the body of a ship that can keep LNG tanks safe through harsh waves. POSCO¡¯s structural steel for shipbuilding is extensively used for this application. Shipbuilding steel is a type of steel used for building ships. It is so strong that, for example, a piece of 10 cm x 15 cm can withstand a load equivalent to 1,000 midsize cars that weigh 1 ton each. BCA1) steel developed for the first time in the world by POSCO is used for 22,000 TEU2) class container vessels, the world¡¯s largest of their kind. An ultra large container vessel often extends as far as four football yards combined. When containers loaded on the vessel are laid one after another, they can extend as long as 132 km, equivalent to the distance between Seoul and Pyeongchang. Icebreakers that operate through ice-covered sea are also another notable application for POSCO¡¯s shipbuilding steel.

Step plates, another demonstration of POSCO¡¯s unparalleled technological capability, have been continuously changing its thickness. The elimination of the need to weld two sheets of steel that differ in thickness can reduce the time for shipbuilding.

  • 1) BCA (brittle crack arrest): The ability to prevent cracks caused by an external impact from propagating
  • 2) TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit): A unit of scale to represent a 20-foot long container
